sustainable and innovative food packaging for fresh produce, made from compostable bio-based polymer material to which a significant proportion of agricultural waste is added during the manufacturing process as a filler, in order to create a new biocomposite.
Sector
A1.6Support activities to agriculture and post-harvest crop activities
Needs/ Problem statement
reduction in the use of plastic materials for packaging
Objective
The overall, long-term objective of the project is to reduce the environmental impact of the production and use of plastic packaging by replacing it on the market with bio-packaging made from straw and biopolymers; to establish a pilot plant for the production of bio-packaging; and to analyse the market and tailor the product to the needs of agricultural businesses.

Outcomes and final product
Prototypes for the packaging will be produced using various methods. We will start by combining biopolymers and straw to determine the minimum amount of biopolymers that can be used.
Testing of the straw concentration at various pressures and its mechanical strength.
Tests on the product’s mechanical strength and compostability.
The final result will be the production of various prototypes in different shapes and combinations, which will be tested during shipping to identify the most suitable one for each application.
