IT153-OLInVAL/OLInVAL

OLInVAL

Description

promotes modern techniques and a circular economy approach that reuses by-products from the olive oil production chain

Sector

A1.6Support activities to agriculture and post-harvest crop activities

Needs/ Problem statement

Olive growing is expanding in the foothills of the Alps – a development that seemed impossible half a century ago, but which, thanks to climate change and certain socio-cultural shifts, appears to be gaining ground in these areas.

Objective

It is an initiative aimed at promoting olive growing in mountainous areas, with a focus on sustainability, innovation and best practice.

Outcomes and final product

The efficacy of olive by-products, in particular phenols extracted from the leaves, in inhibiting the bacterial biofilm of Xylella fastidiosa has been investigated. Endotherapy trials (direct injections into the trunk) using leaf phenolic compounds and potassium phosphite showed a significant increase in leaf area index and the growth of healthy shoots.
