Research and Development of Biofuels from Agricultural Residues

Description

Development of biofuels from agricultural residues from selected seeds and food products. The project optimizes fuel composition and mechanical properties to reduce emissions, and investigates ash properties for potential fertilizer use, closing nutrient cycles.

Sector

A1.6Support activities to agriculture and post-harvest crop activities

Needs/ Problem statement

Agricultural residues are underutilized and burning traditional fuels causes high emissions. There is a need for renewable domestic biofuels with lower emissions and sustainable nutrient management.

Objective

To develop and optimize biofuels from agricultural residues with improved combustion properties, reduced emissions, and the potential reuse of ash as fertilizer, contributing to sustainable energy and circular nutrient cycles.

Outcomes and final product

Agropellets (pellets made from non-wood biomass) with higher bulk density than raw material, allowing less storage space, better transport to boilers, and uniform combustion. The only binder is natural lignin in the biomass. Ash produced during combustion concentrates phosphorus, making it suitable as fertilizer. (RIV 26296080:24:N0000096)
